Beware.....not only does USCIS mess up on the status of cases but they mess up on mailing the receipt notices too.
The last time I renewed my H1-B, they made an error by mixing up my company's address and my lawyer's address. It took 3 months before I finally got the notice.

No my wife never submitted anything related to GC. University approved papers only included copy of my latest I-797's (I am on 3 year extension after PERM labor/I-140 approval). I remember the papers submitted to university (for review) included all that but they sent the approved I-140, etc, back to her.

Thanks a lot Raj for a detailed response.
My one concern was around our EAD and AP if we need to use them but its good to know that we can renew them ourselves.
Also I have copies of labor certification, I140 & I485 filing and scanned copies of I140 approval notice & I485 receipt notices, i will ask for original from my employer. Can they say No or I am entitled to have them.

I think we should also make placards addressing the plight of immigrant's family to highlight some of the family issues because of USCIS flip-flop.
btw, I love the term flip-flop to address our issue. It has such a negative connotation after 2004 election. I think someone used it in July bulletin thread and journalists were quick to latch on to it. We should use more of it in placards and when talking to reporters.

Sent the 485/EAD/AP package on July 19th by lawyer.
Received and signed on July 20th by B. Fisher at Nebraska.
Received FP notice for oct 12 last thrusday and noticed it was sent from TSC.
PD Oct 2002
Did not receive other receipts.

While we all agree - GC given by country quota is not good,
why cant we ask our senators and SJC folks to focus and make somethign like this : if GC is based on country Quota, then H1s too need to be done in the same manner, so that the flow is regulated and predictable.
Atleast asking Sentators to focus on the Quota Business (to make it H1 based on country cap like GC) may be good for Retro folks as fewer applications will pile up from the new H1 folks, this will help the ease of congestion.
In addition : If you also notice, the fresh h1 folks who are coming here in the last 1/2 years are not so attracted by this system, they get paid back in india (some of them like infosys, satyam, wipro), the rest just go back as salary is almost comparable to US.

But this quota system for H1B, based on country would take off, from the Govt point of view possibly as they would expect fewer subject matter experts from countries besides India, China. For instance, if the cap is 65K, 7 % would mean 4K from India and China, so 65k - 8 K would be 57 K from ROW, I am pretty sure that number of people may not come in, and this would also help the congested system for India and China folks. Some thoughts. !

Could you please advice me on the particular topic at hand.
I have filed for a H1b Visa through a US based small consulting company. I was in US working on a L1 visa with another company when I filed for an H1b through this small company. After that I retuned to India where I am currently based out of now. I am supposed to go and get my H1b visa stamped in the near future.
However, over the past few months I am not getting comfortable feeling in joining this small company. I find it difficult to get in touch with them and also do not think they are professional in their operations. Could you please tell me what I need to do if I do not want to join this company? They have made me sign a contract where it is written that if I do not join their company after getting my H1b petition approval, I will have to pay them a certain amount of money towards lost opportunity/expenses etc. My SSN is also mentioned on the contract. Could you please tell me if contracts like this can be enforced and if they can sue me for not joining their company?

he had 7 days of leaves and those guys said they are going to pay him for those instead of even giving him those leaves now and not cancelling it now. They are adamant to send cancellation immediately, might have done it already dont know.

Something is not right with the data you quoted.
On the same page(state dept web site), if you go down a bit see data from section V. That should give data on "Adjustment of Status" aka I-485. Consular Processing data is on differend document.

If I am reading the data correctly, employment preference visa (excluding schedule A worker) category are the biggest losers for India - not a news as we knew this. Here are some comparison between previous fiscal year and FY2006 numbers for India:
